Tips for Preventing Sensitive Teeth From Our Costa Mesa Dentist Office

Preventing sensitive teeth is important to patients of our Costa Mesa dentist office.  When teeth become sensitive it can be painful to eat, drink, brush and floss your teeth.  This creates an uncomfortable situation where going to lunch with friends may no longer be enjoyable.  We can help you to feel better and to prevent sensitive teeth from developing in the first place.

There are several things that you can do at home to decrease your risk of sensitive teeth.  This is because teeth that become sensitive typically do so when the enamel wears away.  Eating a diet that is high in sugar, brushing too aggressively, smoking, and not taking care of your teeth are all fast ways to lose the minerals that make your teeth strong.  This process of demineralization can make your teeth sensitive when they don’t have to be.

Here are some of the ways that you can help your teeth to stay strong and avoid tooth sensitivity.  We recommend that our patients do this in addition to getting their teeth cleaned at our Costa Mesa dentist office.

  • Use a new toothbrush.  You should switch your hard toothbrush for a soft toothbrush so that your teeth won’t be irritated.  When possible, use an electric toothbrush since this will give you a good clean without aggressive brushing.  Battery operated toothbrushes work fairly well and are relatively inexpensive at the drug store.
  • Buy fluoride toothpaste. When you brush with a fluoride, it puts minerals directly onto your teeth that strengthens them and counteracts some of the demineralization processes that happen naturally over time.  We can further strengthen your teeth by applying fluoride in our Costa Mesa dentist office.  This simple treatment can make a big difference in how strong your teeth are.
  • Change your diet.  Switch out your sugary foods for nuts, lean protein, crunchy fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and green leafy veggies.  This, along with drinking water, will help to keep your teeth healthy and strong.
  • Get your teeth sealed.  If the enamel on your teeth is worn away, we can apply a dental sealant to seal the pores inside of the dentin.  Dentin is full of nerve endings, so sealing it will help to reduce any sensitivity that you may be feeling.  We can also perform a bonding procedure to help protect and strengthen your teeth.

In addition to these preventative steps, we will also treat any cavities that may be making your teeth sensitive.  When you develop a cavity, it can start to cause pain when you eat or bite down.  By treating the cavity, we can eliminate the pain that you are experiencing, and the filling will help to strengthen your tooth.  If the center of your tooth becomes infected, a root canal may be necessary for removing the infection and afterwards we will use a dental crown to protect your tooth.

These are some of the ways that we can help to reduce your risk for tooth sensitivity in our Costa Mesa dentist office.
